What to Expect
Built Right, From the First Course to the Last
A retaining wall takes far more strain than a normal wall. It has to carry the weight of the soil behind it, resist water pressure and stay put through years of rain and freeze-thaw. That means a proper foundation, good drainage and the right materials, not just a stack of stone.
Castaneda Masonry builds retaining walls in brick, concrete block and natural stone. We are brick masons first, and we also build impressive stone retaining walls, along with steps, planting terraces, seating walls and ornamental walls that make a sloped yard useful.
Beyond holding the ground, a good retaining wall adds character, curb appeal and value to your home. It controls erosion, manages water and creates level space for gardens, patios and play areas.

Inside the Work
How a Retaining Wall Is Built
A good wall is mostly what you cannot see. Tap each part to see what it does.
Local Knowledge
Built for Middle Tennessee Hills and Clay
Rolling hills, clay soil and heavy rain make drainage the most important part of any wall here. We plan for water first, so your retaining wall keeps standing and keeps looking good.

Our Process
How We Work
Study the Slope
We look at the grade, soil and water flow and talk through what you want from the space.
Plan & Choose Materials
Wall height, footing, drainage and materials are planned together.
Build the Foundation
Compacted base, footing and drainage go in before the first course.
Wall, Cap & Finish
Courses are laid, capstones set and the area is backfilled and cleaned up.

How tall can a retaining wall be?
It depends on the soil, the site and local codes. Taller walls need engineered design, and we will tell you when that is needed.
Do retaining walls need drainage?
Yes. Drainage is one of the most important parts. Water trapped behind a wall is the most common reason walls fail.
Brick, block or stone?
All three work. Brick is classic and consistent, stone is natural and organic, and block is strong and economical when faced with veneer. We help you choose by site, budget and style.
Can you build steps into the wall?
Yes. Integrated steps, landings and planters are some of our most popular details.
